Nestled in the lush landscapes of Can-ayan, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, lies Mt. Kiamo, famously known as The Pitcher Plant Mountain. Standing tall at approximately 1,823 meters above sea level, this mountain offers a unique and thrilling hiking experience. Recently, I embarked on a memorable hike to Mt. Kiamo with my partner, Barry, and a group of friends.
The Journey Begins
Our adventure started with a 30-40 minute hike from the jump-off area to the campsite. Early in the hike, we had to cross a river, a refreshing and adventurous start to our journey. The trail was invigorating, surrounded by the vibrant flora of Bukidnon. Upon reaching the campsite, we set up our tents and took a moment to relax and soak in the serene environment.
As the night fell, the campsite buzzed with camaraderie. We got to know fellow hikers, shared drinks, and indulged in roasted marshmallows and hotdogs. The night was filled with laughter and stories, both light-hearted and eerie. Some shared spine-chilling tales about the spirit of a nun said to haunt the mountain, a story that added a thrilling edge to our night under the stars. Despite the ghostly legends, the campsite felt safe and welcoming as we gathered for dinner and enjoyed the cool mountain air.
The Ascent
At the break of dawn, we woke up at 5 am, ready to conquer the peak of Mt. Kiamo. The trail ahead promised to be challenging, with steep ascents and rugged terrain. As we trekked higher, the climb tested our endurance, but the anticipation of the view kept our spirits high.
After approximately 3-4 hours of determined hiking, we reached the peak. The sight that greeted us was nothing short of breathtaking. The expansive view of Bukidnon’s landscape, bathed in the golden morning light, was a reward worth every strenuous step.
Capturing the Moment
At the summit, I had the opportunity to fly my drone, capturing the stunning vistas from an aerial perspective. The drone soared over the peaks and valleys, highlighting the beauty of Mt. Kiamo and its surroundings. It was a moment of pure joy and accomplishment, feeling connected to nature in such a profound way.
A Refreshing Return
As we made our way back down the mountain, we decided to take a break and have lunch near the river we had crossed earlier. The coolness of the water was incredibly refreshing, and it provided a perfect spot to relax and reflect on our adventure. We enjoyed our meal with the soothing sounds of the river in the background, a perfect ending to our hike.
Reflecting on the Experience
Our hike to Mt. Kiamo was more than just a physical journey; it was an experience of bonding, adventure, and appreciation of nature's magnificence. The mountain's trails, the stories shared around the campfire, and the breathtaking views from the peak created memories that will last a lifetime.
If you're seeking an adventure that combines a challenging hike with rich natural beauty and a touch of local folklore, Mt. Kiamo in Bukidnon is a destination that should not be missed.
